Despite the plethora of information available to the public via the web and numerous professional development opportunities, many adults still implement outdated practices. Unfortunately, access to information doesn’t always translate to change. In this training, entitled 21st Century teaching, Laura helps adults updated their approach to working with children.
From sticker charts and behavioral systems, to time-out and separation from friends, adults rely on strategies that have proven ineffective or even deleterious to children’s health and well-being. The result? Burned out and stressed adults.
Shift your mind, shift your practice: exploring mindset
21st Century Teaching: mind methods
Laura invites participants to “update their software” (beliefs) about promoting healthy development in children. From there, she shares how to transform their classrooms and/or homes. To start, implementing the “mind methods” to promote social, emotional, and relational health. With this, participants combine working knowledge of the brain with mind methods for transformation! Teaching based on science, not habit.
Although changing habits might take time, this training gives participants both the science and practical strategies to do so. What’s more, through both theory and real life stories Laura helps participants grasp the importance of updating one’s approach without judgment. As a former preschool teacher, Laura shares her compassion and support for all adults working with young children. She’s been there. As such, she understands the struggle to keep up with the data and suggested changes.
Laura encourages self-compassion, non-judgment, and loving-kindness for self and others as foundational for working with children to avoid feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. Instead of shaming and blaming ourselves or the children, the tenets of 21st Century teaching hold that there is no such thing as perfect parenting or teaching. Instead, we all do the best we can to keep current, flexible, open, and receptive.
